ReanKhmer

English to Khmer Translator with Pronunciation

ReanKhmer's free translator turns English into Khmer and Khmer into English, and spells out how every Khmer word is pronounced in Latin letters. It was built by the Cambodian diaspora for heritage learners: people who understand some Khmer but never learned to read the script.

How it works

  1. Type or paste your text. Enter English or Khmer. The translator detects which one you typed and picks the direction for you.
  2. Translate. Press Translate, or Cmd/Ctrl + Enter. Your translation appears next to what you typed.
  3. See how it sounds. Khmer text shows its pronunciation underneath in romanized letters, or in IPA if you prefer. When you type Khmer yourself, the pronunciation updates as you go.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Khmer translator free?

Yes. You can translate 3 times a day without an account. A free ReanKhmer account raises that to 10 a day and adds voice input and audio playback. Pro members get 20 translations a day and Premium members get 100.

Does it show how to pronounce the Khmer?

Yes. Khmer text comes with romanization, which spells the sounds out in Latin letters, so ខ្ញុំស្រឡាញ់អ្នក (I love you) reads as "khnhom sralanh neak". You can switch to IPA if you prefer phonetic symbols. Treat it as an approximate guide: Khmer has sounds that English spelling cannot capture exactly.

What is romanization?

Romanization writes Khmer words with the Latin alphabet so you can sound them out before you can read the script. For example, សួស្ដី (hello) is romanized as "suosdei". It helps heritage learners who grew up hearing Khmer connect the sounds they know to the written words.

How accurate is the Khmer to English translation?

Translations come from Google Cloud Translation, which handles everyday Khmer well. Formal, literary, or regional Khmer can come out stiff, so ask a native speaker to check anything important, like a wedding speech or an official letter.

Can I hear the Khmer read aloud?

Yes, with a free account. Signed-in users can play any translation out loud and speak into the microphone instead of typing.

Is there live voice translation?

Live Translation, which translates a spoken conversation as it happens, is coming to ReanKhmer accounts soon. Create a free account now and it will be waiting for you when it launches.

Can I translate long passages?

The translator works best with sentences and short paragraphs. For a long document, translate it a paragraph at a time so each piece stays accurate.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The translator works in any modern phone or tablet browser, with nothing to install.
