Khmer Regional Dialects — Language Variation Across Cambodia
Khmer is not monolithic — there are meaningful regional differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, and even grammar between Phnom Penh, the northwest (Battambang/Siem Reap), the south coast, and the northeast highlands. For diaspora families, the dialect your parents or grandparents speak may differ from "standard" Khmer.

Standard Khmer (ភាសាខ្មែរស្ដង់ដារ) is based on the Phnom Penh dialect used in education and media. Battambang dialect speakers (a large portion of the US diaspora, who came through Thai refugee camps) have distinct pronunciation patterns — particularly vowel sounds — that can differ noticeably from standard Khmer.
